People stand together in a dark room, a place devoid of symbols. They turn in circles, appearing as many, and every now and then someone breaks away from the group to turn to the camera – for a confession or a theatrical expression of individuality. „Wir Sind Zart Zu Uns Selbst“/ „We are tender to ourselves“ is a cut-up of writings, gestures and transcribed talks from the self-help and team-building literature of our time. The video work deals with the conflicting relationship between isolation, individuation and belonging to a group by means of a stylised situation in which the figures seem to be required to reveal themselves to the group in order to belong to it, making the exposures appear artificial and choreographed. The video attempts to depict this dynamic in a single setting: The camera constantly rotates on its own axis and the performers have to subordinate themselves to this movement. Does it represent the group’s view of the individual or is it a kind of internalised Foucaultian observer?
